Community Service
Our Unit helps support
TRAILSEEKERS which is a local group whose goal is to
empower children and strengthen our community. At any given
time, Trailseekers is helping nearly 500 "at risk" children
and their famillies. While these children are just like any
other kids, most come from broken homes. Many are surrounded
by drugs, alcohol or violence. Some are not sure where their
next meal is coming from. While each of these children has a
unique story, the common thread among them is that all of them
need to be loved.
Each year forty-two new Trailseekers are brought into the
program. Children between the ages of five and eight are
primarily identified by educators, counselors and clergy. The
first year these 42 newly identified children are given a five
day camp experience at Orcas Island with a one-on-one
high-school mentor. Trailseekers offers weekly gatherings
which serve as followup to the Orcas Encampment. Trailseekers
are allowed to stay in the program until they are eighteen.
Now many of our high-school mentors are Trailseekers
themselves.
Our unit helps to provide the sack lunches and personal bags
each boy will take on his trip to Orcas Island. Each child's
bag includes a bright blue sweat shirt, two new underpants and
two new socks, a bath towel, washcloth, hand towel, large tube
of toothpaste, toothbrush, comb and small shampoo.
